Mary Gray
Statement of Work
Mary Gray is fascinated by the dancing reflections on the surface of moving water, ever changing, fragmented imagery that distorts reality.
Whether the movement comes from the flowing of a river, the rhythm of the sea or the wake of a swimmer in a pool, the effect is the same. The surface becomes multifaceted and reflects off different planes and angles.
Mary’s work concerns the depiction of these fractured reflections and transient moments of energy and movement in cloth and stitch.
Textile Practice
Mary finds that Plastic, stitched and then heat treated creates the most fluid and water-like cloth. It bends, buckles, distorts, stretches, shrinks, fragments and produces different qualities of light, depicting the different layers and depths of water.
