Wendy Hale
Statement of Work
Wendy is inspired by nature and things around her in everyday life. Inspiration can be found everywhere from walking her dog in the countryside or along the coast, the changing seasons, local landmarks to the colourful markets of Delhi. She is fascinated by small details on old buildings, doors and gates. She takes plenty of photos of anything that catches her eye. She finds inspiration on her annual trips to India and frequently uses bright colours and silks in her work. Landscapes, seascapes, flowers especially poppies and daisies are particular favourites to embroider. Also, animals including dogs, cats, hare, sheep, pigs, elephants feature regularly in her work. Many of her countryside scenes are inspired by the beautiful countryside of Herefordshire where she grew up.
Textile Practice
Wendy enjoys experimenting & playing with different techniques to create pattern, shape and texture. She loves hand stitch and free machine embroidery, but also incorporates felting, printing, dyeing, rust dyeing, mark making and layering. Collage and sewing paper are other techniques she enjoys. She finds it satisfying and rewarding to use old things or something that had been cherished by someone she knows to give it a new lease of life or a transformation.
